Vic: Man jailed for murdering lover over sex tapes
MELBOURNE, Feb 16 AAP - A Melbourne man who murdered a male lover after discovering
their sexual encounters were being secretly filmed has been jailed for at least 11 years.
Gregory Robert Webb, 26, strangled 43-year-old Jason King in the older man's Croydon
lounge room after they watched pornography and drank alcohol together on February 3 last
year.
Webb, formerly of Dandenong, pleaded guilty in the Victorian Supreme Court to murder.
Sentencing Webb to a maximum jail term of 15 years, with a minimum of 11 years, Justice
Robert Osborn today described the murder as a "savage and deliberate killing".
The former builder's labourer, whom the court was told sold sex to Mr King to pay for
drugs, became angry after he discovered Mr King had been filming their encounters with
a hidden video camera in his lounge room, the court was told.
Webb stopped seeing Mr King after discovering he was being filmed.
He then tried to turn his life around by finding employment as a builder's labourer.
On the night of the murder he went to Mr King's home to confront him, the court was told.
"In your record of interview you told police that you could not handle the build-up
of embarrassment at having engaged in sexual acts with another man," Justice Osborn said.
"You felt particular anger that he had video-recorded your engaging in such acts. In
your own words he had jeopardised a secret."
Webb dumped Mr King's naked body in a roadside ditch in Lyndhurst, south-east of Melbourne,
where it was discovered 13 days later.
He also stole several items from Webb's home including compact discs, a video recorder,
a DVD player and a mobile phone.
Justice Osborn said Webb abused Mr King's trust and hospitality, inflicted pain and
terror upon him and robbed his home and "disposed of his body as if it were rubbish".
He said he also took into account Webb's emotional vulnerability at the time of the
offence, his expressions of remorse, his plea of guilty and good prospects of rehabilitation.
Webb's lawyer said earlier her client was not homosexual and engaged in sex acts with
Mr King in order to get money for drugs.

360buy.com Cuts into After-sales Service for Expansion
BEIJING, Apr 15, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- 360buy.com, one of the fast-expanding online retailers in China, is looking to make a push into the after-sales service market for a bigger share of the electronics market, a move market observers say will possible pose a great threat to retailers in Beijing.
360buy.com has gained a license from Acer Inc., one of the world's top-ranking personal computer (PC) makers, to provide after-sales services for the Acer laptop computer users to come up with a rising demand, said Wang Zhijun, the newly-appointed vice president for the Beijing-based company, on March 16.
As part of its efforts, 360buy.com will set up an after-sales service center for the detection of the Acer laptop initially and maintenance services in the future, according to Mr. Wang.
360buy.com is in talks with a group of electronics makers for the licensing of after-sales services in the country, disclosed Mr. Wang, noting that the company spent two to three months preparing for the proposed cooperation with Acer.
"360buy.com poached many an engineer from some after-sales service providers for the launch of the new business," said Mr. Wang, "then they were sent to Acer for training for some time."
The company expects to make after-sales service one of its controllable operations in the long run, pointed out Mr. Wang, explaining why 360buy.com turned to after-sales service at a time when most of its peers outsource such services.
Statistics from Forrester Research showed that a majority of the new computer users came from Brazil, India, Russia, and China at the moment, with the user growth in China topping 27% a year. There are more than 40 million laptops in China.
Such an expansion, according to market observers, will deal a blow to existing after-sales service providers in Zhongguancun, a renowned electronics fair. At the moment, gross profit margin of after-sales service stand at 10% in the country, disclosed Mr. Wang.
360buy.com plans to integrate the after-sales service of the 3C (communication, computer and consumer electronics) makers that market products on the 360buy platform to make itself the biggest 3C product after-sales service platform operator in the country, according to Mr. Wang.
The multibrand after-sales service center will extend its reach to all the products available in the long run, starting from 3C products such as mobile phones and PCs, said Mr. Wang, noting that 360buy.com markets products for more than 1,000 suppliers at the moment.

QLD:Tropical cyclone Tasha crosses Qld coast
By Lisa Martin
BRISBANE, Dec 25 AAP - A faltering tropical cyclone Tasha crossed the far north Queensland
coast between Cairns and Innisfail on Christmas morning.
Bureau of meteorology senior forecaster Greg Browning told AAP the fading category
one cyclone made land about 5.30am (AEST) south of Cairns.
"It's steadily weakening, the winds have dropped off significantly now that it has
passed over land," he said.
" (But) there's still a lot of rainfall associated with the system."
Mr Browning said the cyclone was at the low end of the scale when it crossed between
the townships of Gordonvale and Babinda.
"It was the weakest that a cyclone can be," he said.
"The only gale-force winds we did observe were offshore over the water.
"Once it impacted land we haven't seen any gale-force winds there, there probably were
some localised areas that had some borderline gale force winds."
Mr Browning stressed that flooding was the main concern.
"The rain is going to be the issue," he said.
"There's areas of localised flooding to the south of Cairns.
"There's been some pretty significant rainfall figures between Cairns and north of
Mackay overnight."
Meanwhile, Mr Browning said a second low pressure system in the Gulf of Carpentaria
was not likely to reach tropical cyclone intensity.
"(The system) does look like it will intensify in the next few days but it depends
on its movements," he said.
"It doesn't look like it will stay in the Gulf of Carpentaria long enough to develop
into a tropical cyclone... but things can change between now and then."
Goldsborough Valley recorded 279mm, the next highest rainfall was Corsis with 277mm,
followed by Topaz with 276mm.
Cairns received less than 100mm of rain.
Atherton Tablelands resident Bronwen Scott told AAP she expected some damage to her
rainforest block property.
"It's still too windy to go outside and assess the damage, but there are very large
branches lying in the garden," she said.
"The wind is still gusting strongly and there's rain, but it's nowhere near as torrential
as it was earlier.
"Plenty of loud snapping and cracking sounds overnight, so I'm expecting a few trees
over in the forest and probably across the road as well.
"Very heavy rain turned the back garden into a creek, but that's gone down now.
"A couple of pademelons (small marsupials) slept on the patio. It wasn't perfectly
dry, but it certainly beat the forest for comfort."
Ms Scott said she would keep an eye on the nearby river.
"I'm about 500 metres from the North Johnstone River and it sounds like a motorway.
Normally it's a distant murmur," she said.
The State Disaster Coordinator, Queensland Police Deputy Commissioner Ian Stewart,
said it was vital that people stay tuned for warnings and alert their neighbours.
Authorities have also warned of the dangers of floodwaters.
"As north Queenslanders prepare to visit family and loved ones for Christmas, emergency
authorities are warning to avoid unnecessary travel," Deputy Commissioner Stewart said
in a statement.
"In the rush to see friends and family, people may think they're bullet-proof and sadly,
some may attempt to cross flooded roads and causeways.
"This practice is deadly and we're pleading with motorists to stay out of floodwaters.
"I couldn't think of a worse day to have to tell relatives their loved one has died
trying to make their way to them by entering floodwaters.
"It's simply not worth the risk," Deputy Commissioner Stewart said.
Emergency services are on standby to assist
Ergon energy spokesman Mark Timmerman told AAP power was cut to about 6000 homes in
far north Queensland from about 3am (AEST).
He said the main areas affected included Gordonvale, Mission Beach, Atherton Tablelands
and Mourilyan Harbour.
Power cuts are not widespread, he said.
"Crews are responding on the coast but our crews on the Tablelands at the moment are
sitting tight waiting for the worst of the weather to pass, it's still very windy up there,"
he said.
"Just for their safety, they're waiting for that wind to die down and then they'll
go out and do their assessments."
Mr Timmerman said the power outages were mainly caused by trees falling on power lines

Vic: Australia and India sign up to further education
By Greg Roberts
MELBOURNE, April 8 AAP - Three months after the stabbing death of Indian graduate Nitin
Garg on his way to work in Melbourne, Australia and India have signed a major deal on
education.
An India-Australia Education Council - made up of experts from both sides - will be
formed and a joint ministerial statement has been signed to expand the education exchange
program.
The relationship reached an all-time low following Garg's death - which followed other
violent attacks on Indians - and a travel advisory was issued by the Indian government
warning students against coming to Australia.
Kapil Sibal, India's Minister of Human Resource Development - which includes education
- met with Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard in Melbourne for the signing.
The pair met last September and on Thursday Mr Sibal said he believed the attacks on
young Indians had declined.
"The fact that I am here suggests we want to take the relationship forward, it does
not mean that we are not concerned about what's happening here," he told reporters.
"The advisory obviously was given at a point in time when the incidents were at a height...students
are still coming to Australia, we have not prevented them.
"I think the Australian government is taking strong steps in that direction to prevent
those thing happening."
The federal education department revealed recently that international student numbers
were down nationally three per cent and 12 per cent in Victoria.
The decline in Indian student numbers in Victorian institutions was 40 per cent, from
6303 to 3761.
Ms Gillard said the government would toughen up regulation of education colleges through
a "re-registration process" following problems with international students not getting
proper qualifications.
"For an Indian family that sends a young person to this country a long way from home,
they want to know that their young person is going to be safe, get a good experience,
a great education and they're going to be able to go back home and use those skills,"
Ms Gillard said.
Last week a new law came into effect in India making it compulsory for the state to
provide free education to every child in India aged between six and 14 years.
There is currently a high school drop-out rate of 43 per cent, which Mr Sibal wants
to reduce, while increasing the number of university and vocational training students
from 12.4 per cent (22 million) to 30 per cent (60 million) by 2020.
They will need 800,000 elementary school teachers - there are currently about 500,000
- 700-800 universities and 40,000-50,000 students in a decade to do it.
"It's in that context we are reaching out to Australia, saying you have enormous opportunities
in India to partner with us at the school, vocational education and training level, higher
education and research level," Mr Sibal said.
"It's very important for both of us at the two ends to develop the skills which allow
our human resources to take advantage."

Sai: Sailors jet into Beijing for opening ceremony
By Simon Mossman
QINGDAO, Aug 7 AAP - They might be hundreds of kilometres from Beijing but several
of Australia's sailors are determined not to miss out on the Olympic opening ceremony
experience.
Ten members of the 17-strong sailing squad, including six Games debutants, will tomorrow
fly to the Chinese capital to join Australian teammates marching in the opening ceremony.
Women's 470 sailor Tessa Parkinson said she and crewmate Elise Rechichi decided only
at the last minute to take part in the opening.
"It's going to be very exciting going up to Beijing and it will be a nice distraction
from all the hard training we've been doing the past few weeks," Parkinson told AAP today.
"I don't think the nerves have kicked in yet but we are looking forward to getting
up there and having some fun before we start our competition.
"We just wish racing could start, we're itching to get out and get going. We've been
doing a lot of training for it."
Dual Laser world champion and world No.1 Tom Slingsby, who is also making his Olympics
debut, said he expected the opening ceremony would help fire him up ahead of his opening
races on Tuesday.
"I cannot wait to get up there, I think it will spark me and get me going. We've been
waiting a long time for this but it's getting close though," Slingsby said.
"It will be a great experience to be part of the opening ceremony."
Other team members flying up include first-time Olympians Iain Murray and Andrew Palfrey
(Star), and Glenn Ashby (Tornado), along with veteran campaigners Malcolm Page and Nathan
Wilmot (470m), Jessica Crisp (RS:X) and Ashby's crewmate Darren Bundock, a silver medallist
from the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
The Olympic sailing regatta starts on Saturday with the first opening races for the
Yngling and Finn classes, followed by the 49er skiff class on Sunday.

Fed: Country music legend Smoky Dawson dead at 94
Eds; closes off earlier
SYDNEY, Feb 14 AAP - Country music legend Smoky Dawson has died at the age of 94, after
a short illness.
A spokeswoman for the Australian Country Music Foundation said Dawson passed away yesterday
at 5.15pm (AEDT) in Sydney.
He is survived by his wife Dot.
"He had been ill for the past six days," Dee Giles told AAP.
"There will be a private service for family and friends held in Sydney, and that's
strictly private because of his wife Dot, who turns 102 this year and she's very frail.
"But there will be a public memorial in a few weeks time."
Dawson, born Herbert Henry Dawson in Melbourne in 1913, began his musical career in
1934 and became a household name in Victoria through a live radio show on 3UZ.
He recorded dozens of albums and hosted the radio show The Adventures of Smoky Dawson from 1952.
Dawson was elevated to the Country Music Roll of Renown in 1978 and in 1993 the Australian
Country Music Foundation was created in Tamworth, citing him as a direct inspiration.
In 2005 he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.
Philip Mortlock, the managing director of Origin Records, Dawson's record label, said
it was time to celebrate the life of an Australian legend.
"It is a very sad day, but I have to say that Smoky brought a lot of joy to a lot of
people for many years," Mr Mortlock told Sky News.
"While it is a sad day, his passing for me, I think it's time to celebrate a great
life and a great man."

NT: Performance based pay system fatally flawed: Smith
DARWIN, April 12 AAP - The federal government's plan for a performance-based pay system
for teachers is "fatally flawed", says Federal Opposition Education spokesman Stephen
Smith.
In a united Labor front, state and territory education ministers gathered behind Mr
Smith outside parliament house in Darwin, ahead of this afternoon's meeting with their
federal Counterpart, Julie Bishop.
Ms Bishop is expected to call on the ministers to adopt a Commonwealth plan to pay
public school teachers on merit from 2009, starting with a trial performance pay for teachers
over the coming year.
Her plan would see teachers paid based on principals' assessments of their work, student
exam results and parent feedback - and she has threatened to withhold $3 billion in commonwealth
education funding if the states refuse.
But Mr Smith said today the proposal was "narrow and simplistic".
"It's quite clear from the documents that Ms Bishop has distributed that their model
of performance pay is fundamentally and fatally flawed," Mr Smith told reporters.
"The Howard government has been trying to use performance pay to beat up on the states
and territories, beat up on teachers and unlike Labor they are not serious about genuinely
trying to reward quality teaching."
Instead of rewarding teachers under an arbitrary system of excellence, Mr Smith said
Labor would provide financial incentives for teachers who taught in remote or rural areas,
joined up to mentoring programs, and obtained special skills and accreditation in key
areas such as maths and science.
Grading teachers according to the outcomes of standardised tests was an approach adopted
in the US which subsequently failed, Mr Smith said.
"We won't be using the outcomes of standardised tests as the basis for our deliberations
in that area," he said, while also acknowledging that defining quality teaching was "a
difficult public policy question to answer".
"Do I have a concluded view as to how that can be judged? No I don't," he said.
"I openly acknowledge ... it is very hard to make a public policy judgment about determining
the quality of a teacher actually in the classroom.
"Things like peer review, assessment, mentoring, engaging in ongoing development, these
are all things that can improve and increase the quality of the teacher in the classroom."

some time to come.
But opposition foreign affairs spokesman KEVIN RUDD has told Seven the threat is a

Fed: Fall in business sector borrowing in Dec: ABS
CANBERRA, Feb 14 AAP - The business sector may be putting the brakes on its borrowing
binge with new figures showing a fall in business lending in December.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics said the total value of commercial finance commitments
for December dropped 2.7 per cent to $31.5 billion. That followed a 16.7 per cent rise
in November.
There was a 10.3 per cent fall in fixed loans from the commercial sector, which more
than offset a 15.4 per cent increase in revolving credit commitments.
The bureau attributed the rise in revolving credit commitments to the finance and insurance
industries, which contributed almost $2 billion of the $3.8 billion increase.
Personal finance commitments rose 1.9 per cent to $6 billion, due to a 4.2 per cent
increase in fixed lending commitments. There was a 0.1 per cent drop in personal revolving
credit commitments.
Lease finance commitments rose 5.6 per cent to $562 million.
The total value of housing finance increased 1.1 per cent to $13 billion.

Toyota to consumers: Join our cyber club ;Maker's Web site, portal boost appeal.
Advances in retail technology are changing the way global automakers sell vehicles around the world. In Japan, where consumers rapidly embrace new technology, Toyota Motor Corp. uses a two-pronged approach that includes a Web site and a portal called Gazoo. Gazoo appeals to younger car buyers, who must register to become members and use the site for a variety of services. The approach is working, according to Toyota Executive Vice President Kosuke Yamamoto. Editor Edward Lapham interviewed Yamamoto in his Tokyo office on April 4. An edited transcript follows.
Are Toyota dealers in Japan involved in your e-commerce?
Toyota has 300 dealers and 5,000 sales outlets in Japan. And basically Toyota addresses B2C in two ways. The first way is the Toyota Motor Corp. Web site. The 300 dealers also have Web sites and home pages. These are interactive home pages, so the users can enter such information as what color and what kind of accessories they want in their car. And based on the information entered by the users, we can give suggestions as well as the price of the car that the users want.
Since our home page and the dealers' home pages are linked, users who come to Toyota's Web site are referred to the closest dealer.
So consumers cannot actually buy the car over the Internet. They are referred to a dealer?
Yes, the potential customer needs to physically visit the dealer. The price negotiation has to be done face to face. Also, here in Japan, the potential car owner needs a certificate from the police showing that he has a place to park the car. The dealers have to get that certificate. And there also are the questions of tax payment, financing and auto insurance as well as arrangements for required maintenance of the vehicle.
What is the other system for B2C?
The other is Gazoo. Gazoo is a membership club, and the Gazoo terminals or kiosks are placed in various parts of the country. The members can access Gazoo through the kiosks or terminals or through the Internet.
There are kiosks or terminals at the dealers or the sales outlets as well as the video rental shop called Tsutaya, which is like a Japanese Blockbuster Video, as well as at various convenience stores.
Such as at 7-Eleven stores or Lawson's?
Unfortunately, 7-Eleven is not part of this program. We have terminals or kiosks at Sankusand Circle K chain stores. There is a plan to expand this further, which would expand the Gazoo alliance to 13,000 outlets.
How many members does Gazoo have?
Gazoo has 500,000 members and is growing by approximately 2,000 per day.
What kind of content is on the site?
Gazoo provides information on new cars, used cars, repair and maintenance, insurance and financing. In the area of repair, if a viewer enters information into Gazoo about the damage of the car, including a photograph, the estimate of the repair cost would be calculated and shown to that user.
For used cars, you get the visual information. For financing, Gazoo shows the generic information because the specifics vary from dealer to dealer. So you have to go to the dealer to get the exact financing plan.
What about nonautomotive features?
One major feature is the Gazoo Mall, which currently has about 1,000 merchants or stores where the viewers can actually shop.
Using a credit card to purchase?
Yes. Since you can shop over the Internet, this is a very attractive feature and we believe that the number of merchants will continue to grow. Eventually, we would like to distribute music over Gazoo that can be downloaded; also, set up what we call the Gazoo plaza, where concerts could be held. Gazoo plaza is where people can have fun. Current membership is 500,000, but we expect this membership to grow to between 4 million to 5 million within four to five years.
Is there a charge for membership?
No. It's free. Members need to register their true names, but there is no membership fee. So you might want to join.
Is Gazoo bringing in younger buyers? Is it getting first-time buyers interested in Toyota?
Yes. We are making other efforts to attract younger buyers as well. Since last fall, we have launched several models that appeal to the younger customers.
Do you use special promotions for these new models on the Internet?
No.
How is traffic on your Web site and on Gazoo?
At our Toyota home page we receive 10 million hits per month, and many of those people are interested in knowing about the company itself.
What about requests for product information?
We are getting 1 million specific inquiries about specific models over Gazoo and another 1 million over our home page. That's well over 2 million hits all together. Of course, an overwhelming majority of those people who make the hits to Toyota home pages are the younger generation.
Do you surf the Net? What kinds of things do you like to do online? Do you buy things online? Have you bought a book or a sweater or ... ?
No. The most popular service of Gazoo currently is gift purchasing. The Gazoo Mall has a big gift purchasing service. For example, if the user asks a department store what kind of gift items it carries, the department store provides a full list of gifts that the user can choose from. The user clicks and enters the list of recipients of the gifts, and all those gifts are delivered. The younger people really like this feature.
In North America, young people like to buy music and videos and all sorts of things from sites such as Amazon.com. And there are trading sites, such as eBay, where individuals can go and can auction off things. Does Gazoo have something like that?
Not yet.
Autobytel and CarPoint have entered the Japanese market. What will Toyota do?
Toyota does not plan to form an alliance or partner with either Autobytel or CarPoint because we would like to interface with our customers through our own network. Otherwise, our customer information will go to Autobytel and CarPoint and we do not believe that would be in the best interest of our business.
