Fed: Moore resigns from ministry and parliament =2

Mr MOORE says his resignation will make way for a new minister to take up the challenge
of the new Defence White Paper's implementation.

He says the successful Interfet deployment of Australian troops in East Timor was the
top achievement of his time as defence minister, while the white paper was second.

It remains unclear exactly when Mr MOORE will resign his Queensland seat of Ryan, with
the minister saying only that it'll be in the new year.

It will create the need for a by-election in the seat which he holds by around 10 per
cent on a two-party preferred basis.

Family and Community Services Minister JOCELYN NEWMAN has also announced her resignation
from cabinet today.
